Rocky Trail Entertainment is excited to host their 100 km marathon event on 9 February 2014 at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra and have also announced a new major sponsor with the Australian Mountain Bike Magazine. The AMB 100 Marathon will feature one of the longest racing circuits possible at the popular venue and for the 100 km challenge participants will have to complete three laps of the race course.
The giant race circuit will be about 33-35km long and link together many of the trail sections at Stromlo Forest Park. Because of its high proportion of singletrails and the rocky and rough terrain, word among the endurance racing crowd has it that this event is probably one of the hardest marathon races around.
“The AMB 100 Marathon will definitely be one of the most challenging races on the Australian mountain bike calendar next year – to race 100 km at Stromlo is not for the faint of heart”, said event director Juliane Wisata today. “Our race circuit, however, will include the most popular trail sections with berm descends and switchback climbs and almost all of it on singletrails. So it’s a very fun and rewarding course as well.”
A pairs racing category allows racers to team up with a friend and accomplish the 100 km challenge together. Furthermore, cruisy challenges to race one and two loops are offered as well.
100 miler back by popular demand
The organisers expect again a high-profile field of athletes with nationally and internationally acclaimed mountain bikers on the start line of the AMB 100 Marathon. Some riders will again take on an additional hurdle with a 5 am start to complete five laps for the 100 mile challenge. More than 20 racers competed in the five-loop monster challenge in 2013 and Canberra’s Ed McDonald claimed his third consecutive elite men’s win ahead of 24-hour Solo World Champion Jason English and fellow local rider Callum McNamara.
“A morning lap at Stromlo is such an awesome experience – the 100-miler racers start in the dark, in eery silence and out onto a quiet track. As the sun comes out, the view from the top of the observatory is just magical”, explained Juliane Wisata one of the 100-mile race’s most fascinating aspects.
