Route Descriptions

This event offers 3 distance options; the route starts at Cotter Reserve and takes you into the Brindabella Ranges. All 3 loops start with a big climb to fire up the legs right away. All three distance options are basically figure eights. The crossing point of that figure eight is at checkpoint 1 for all three distances.

Details

  • Short Loop (Yellow) – is a beautiful ride with everything – sharp descents, beautiful vistas of the dam, flat champagne gravel, ride along the river, climb to the first checkpoint 1+3 (feedzone) then continue on figure eight, come back to checkpoint 1+3 and return to finish via undulating terrain. Imagine 4 parts of that yellow figure 8:
    1. From Cotter Reserve, start riding in anti-clockwise direction to CP1+3,
    2. continue and then
    3. turn RIGHT into Blundells Creek Rd to start completing your figure eight, turn RIGHT again towards CP1+3; that CP1+3 is your crossing point of yellow figure eight route,
    4. you pass CP1+3 for the second time and then you’re on the home stretch.
  • Middle Loop (Pink) – continues from checkpoint 1+3 (feedzone) and that’s where the climbing challenge starts, grit, endurance and gravel riding skills will be put to the test. Steady and relatively gentle climbing towards checkpoint 2 (water, energy). This is where you turn off, while the Long-Loop-Riders keep going. Continue on fast roads back towards checkpoint 1+3 (feedzone) – careful, open to public traffic, so watch out for any cars and a hard right hand-turn (clearly marked) on a fast descent – undulating terrain and you’re back at checkpoint 1+3 (feedzone), then return to the finish. Imagine 4 sections of that pink figure 8:
    1. From Cotter Reserve, start riding in anti-clockwise direction to CP1+3,
    2. continue and then ride straight past the turn-off point for the Short Loop, with relatively gentle climbing towards CP2 (water, energy), follow signs too stay on Bendora Rd after CP2 and turn RIGHT onto Mount Franklin Road to start completing your figure eight; watch out for the turn-off RIGHT into Brindabella Road!
    3. Fast roads back to CP1+3 (watch out for that RIGHT turn!), CP1+3 is your crossing point of the pink figure eight route,
    4. you pass CP1+3 for the second time and then you’re on the home stretch.
  • Long Loop (Red) – continues on from checkpoint 2 (water, energy) and we’re in the total wilderness now, untouched landscapes and we have a special permission to ride along these gravel roads. The terrain changes and the tracks are getting quite rough especially for gravel bikes as these roads are rarely used. A fast descent and then some steep, hard climbing before you’re at the southern most point of the Effervelo route – you’re half-way on your ride and can be proud of the 80% of climbing that you’ve done for the day! Mostly downhill from there, but leave some juice in the tank and refuel regularly to tackle the undulating terrain back to checkpoint 1+3 (feedzone) and then onto the home straight to the finish line, completing your figure eight. Imagine 4 sections of that red figure 8:
    1. From Cotter Reserve, start riding in anti-clockwise direction to CP1+3, continue and then ride straight past the turn-off point for the Short Loop (Blundells Creek Rd); continue to CP2 ignore the the Middle Loop turn-off (those riders STAY on Bendora Rd) at CP2.
    2. At CP2, you turn into Moonlight Hollow Rd until you get to the Southern-most point of your red loop at Aggie Gap.
    3. Continue RIGHT into Mount Franklin Road, you’re now on the way back. There is a turn-off into Brindabella Road and then – careful, DON’T MISS THE TURNOFF towards CP1+3 – is your crossing point of the red figure eight route.
    4. You pass CP1+3 for the second time and then you’re on the home stretch.
