Ethan Weiss and Kristen Rowlands are the outright winners in Mackay

Rocky Trail Entertainment put on three days of racing on ‘rocky trails’ at Rowallan MTB Park in Mackay on the weekend. The Friday had 8 schools and over 70 secondary students compete in the Rocky Trail Academy Central Queensland Schools Competition and the top riders Ethan Weiss and Kristen Rowlands repeated their victories in their categories in the weekend’s Fox Superflow gravity enduro competition.

Race Director Bob Morris said that with such junior talent on show in Mackay it had been an inspiring schools event, “Mackay proves that the success of MTB programs in a high school is based on passionate kids, supportive parents and amazing teachers. It was absolutely inspiring to meet these kids who love to ride, so many parents who love seeing their kids having fun, and teachers like Pete (Mackay Christian Collage), Ben (Mercy College Mackay), Lucy (Mackay State High School) and more who support, encourage and do the mountain of work in the background to make success happen.”

Over 15% of the field had been female he said with Cleo Mcleod, Willow Mason and Skye Duncan all from Mackay Christian College stood atop the podium in the Senior Female category earning maximum bonus points for the School. Kristen Rowlands from Mercy College Mackay, Danica Cromb from Mackay State High School and Trinity Hutt from Rockhampton Grammar School shared the bonus points in the female intermediate category.

“Kristen was the fastest female on all tracks and the fastest female overall. She is a real talent and will go well at a national level with some luck and persistence,” said Morris. It was no surprise that Kristen did really well in the weekend’s Fox Superflow race, which included more challenging gravity trails and 15 race runs on the 3 tracks all up.

In the Male categories the bonus points were more evenly spread but there were smiles for miles as all boys tested the limits. Will Kelly and Jared Havemann from Mackay Christian College and Travis Hutt from Rockhampton Grammar School were the in the Senior Male category.

Ethan Weiss from Mackay State High School, Lockie Bourke and Edward Spicer from Mercy College Mackay shared bonus points in the Intermediate Male category. Ethan was the fastest on all tracks and fastest rider of the day overall on the Friday as well as on the Fox Superflow weekend. This was not unexpected as he is a national champion and Rowallan Park is his main training ground.

Mackay Christian College first place with 271points, Mercy College Mackay in second with 145 points, and Mackay State High School on 122 points taking third.

Growing popularity of MTB in Mackay

Both events were proudly supported by Mackay Regional Council’s Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction program. The Mackay trails had been well-known for its cross-country style events and for the second time the Fox Superflow race again put up three unique race tracks with innovative trail combinations. “Even the local riders commented that it was fun to re-discover their home trails and re-kindle their love for mountain bike racing with this popular format on their home track”, said Event Manager Jo Parker.

In the Elite Men with Ethan Weiss at the top of the podium with a race time of 7:54.9 it was Kiah Dumingan from Devereux Creek who claimed the second position (8:25.0). Will Kelly came in third with 8:46.8. The U17 racer Lockie Bourke from East Mackay came in outright third with a race time of 8:38.4.

In the women’s overall Kirsten Rowlands clocked in 10:47.8 for the outright line-honours and the win in the U17’s ahead of Bec Steele from Sarina in the 30+ Veterans class (13:13.8) and Master 40+ racer Anne-Marie Kehres from Proserpine (14:21.2).

The Mackay race was the first in a series of three, which will form the Fox Superflow QLD North Series with Atherton coming up on 5+6 June and Townsville on 26+27 June.
