Epic Fox Superflow racing in the Dandenong ranges: Silvan

Silvan Reservoir Mountain Bike trails are a hidden gem within Melbourne’s Metropolitan area. On the back side of the Dandenong Range the trails drop through the beautiful Mountain Ash forest and fern filled gullies. Rising over 600m the Dandenong ranges creates its own weather and draws rain to it. If there are showers in Melbourne, then there are showers around the Dandenong. And showers we had with a occasional drizzle on Saturday. Consistent lite rain overnight and showers on Sunday. In all about 40mm fell despite forecasts prediction 2-10mm. This was the setting of an epic FOX Superflow sealed by STANS event that those who braved the conditions will long remember.

1381 individual runs were recorded on the weekend with riders coming from across Victoria and from as far away as Sydney in NSW. With Saturday providing the better times but Sunday providing the more epic racing experience.

U15’s racer Elleni Turkovic claims the fastest women’s time

In the Women, Under 15 rider from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Elleni Turkovic was the fastest with 11:23.1 total time, ahead of local Elite riders Rachel Hore and Kate Braithwaite, 11:48.5 and 12:07.6 respectively. Elleni is new to racing and at this stage is keeping it fun chasing her younger brother Daniel and father Denis.

In the Male categories Jack Ward took the win in the U17 with a very impressive time of 9:22.5 which placed him 3rd outright. Elleni’s brother Daniel Turkovic took the U13 by over a minute in 11:04.5. Lachy Roberts and Patrick Ward battled it out in the U15 with Lachy eventually prevailing with a 9:50.2 ahead of Patrick’s 9:59.0.

Local racer Cooper Downey takes the Elite win

The growing Ebike category was extremely competitive with Ben Suttmann eventually pipping Alex Swann with a 9:34.8 to Alex’s 9:37.2. Alex works at the local bike shop Yarra Valley Cycles and has really gotten behind Rocky Trails expansion into Victoria with the shop providing 13 riders to the weekends racing.

One of those Yarra Valley Cycles riders Cooper Downey took the win in the Elite Male category and was fastest outright with a 9:08.7 ahead of Hugh Chapman in 9:18.2 and Will Tarenidis 9:23.8. All 3 riders had the advantage of the better conditions of Saturday. I expect it would have been interesting to see how the weekend transpired if Sunday’s racers had had similar conditions but that is the luck of racing.

Rocky Trail is excited to be bringing our events to Victoria and could not (and indeed would not) do it without the support of local clubs. Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers work with Parks Victoria to maintain the trails within the Silvan network and are looking to get more sanctioned tracks for all. We appreciate all the support they have given Rocky Trail and hope we can work with them in the future.
