Local domination in Mackay: Ethan Weiss wins Fox Superflow® gravity enduro
The line-up at the Fox Superflow® was small, but close racing offered a thrilling competition. With almost half of the competitive field visiting from out of the Mackay region, Rocky Trail’s flagship gravity enduro race on the weekend was dominated by local rider Ethan Weiss.
The 17-year old competed in the Elite classification and completed the challenging three race stages in 6:44.2 as the fastest racer on course. Some interstate racers as well as a good dozen of South East Queenslanders who travelled to Mackay’s Rowallan MTB Park loved the tracks, but couldn’t beat the local knowledge. The 39-year old Clay Schulz from the Gold Coast came in second outright with 7:02.3 and claimed the Veteran category win. With only 0.2 seconds of a gap, Callum Duffy from Western Sydney was third overall with 7:02.5 -the 19-year old was the winner in the Expert category.

In the women’s and with a winning race time of 7:27.3 Elite racer Jess Hoskin Elite from the Sunshine Coast was too strong for the local U17’s racer Kristen Rowlands who finished in 8:23.7. Kristen is the School Mountain Bike Captain at Mercy College Mackay and a real prospect for the future. Master 40+ racer Kate Deambrogio came in third overall in the women’s.

Almost 20 students of Mercy Colleage in Mackay competed also in the Rocky Trail Academy Schools competition on the Friday and claimed the Schools Championship Title for most points achieved. Part of the junior development program by Rocky Trail, the Academy schools competitions is all about encouraging students of all abilities to come and race with their mates in a safe and social environment. Students from 14 schools took on the challenge to test their riding ability across three skill areas at Rowallan MTB Park – Endurance, Speed and Technical Skills.

Rocky Trail’s National Event Manager Jo Parker said that the program reflected the values the company wanted to foster by engaging youth in healthy social and active recreation. “Our Rocky Trail Academy events bring a heightened appreciation of nature, the environment, self-reliance , self-learning and independence, all as part of riding a bike in the outdoors. By extension, this program also engages and educates teachers and parents and the schools competitions have become a great pathway towards our cross-country races and the Fox Superflow® in particular.”
