Port Macquarie to host Rocky Trail MTB Carnival this June

This June one of Australia’s major private mountain bike organisers, Rocky Trail Entertainment will return to Port Macquarie with two back to back racing weekends in what is expected to be a “MTB Carnival” at Jolly Nose MTB Park. The Fox Superflow race will open the account on 19+20 June bringing Australia’s most popular and fastest growing gravity enduro event to town. On the following Saturday, 26 June, the cross-country endurance riders will compete in the Shimano MTB Grand Prix 4 and 6 hour event.

Over 400 competitors are expected to take part in the two event weekends at Jolly Nose MTB Park in June. Says Juliane Wisata, one of the Rocky Trail founders, “With these two races we are bringing Rocky Trail flagship events into the region with the goal to revive the winter tourism shoulder season.

The Fox Superflow has been gaining popularity, because it is such a social race.” Rocky Trail had invested heavily over the years in making this the most flexible race format, he explained.

“First-time and casual racers will get as much of a challenge and fun out of it as an elite racer. In fact, we’ve had National Champs compete alongside groups of mates and even U13’s racers, who are out there with their mum and dad.”

The Shimano MTB GP has had strong support from the cycling industry over the past 13 years and is now one of the major amateur cross-country endurance racing series in Australia. “From the first time between the tape to racers that have spent a lifetime training for power output, they will all enjoy lining up at our start line”, explains Wisata. In the current COVID-19 event recovery stage, overall registration patterns for the 2021 Rocky Trail season indicated that their events will continue to grow after a record year in 2020, she added.

Local support helps showcase Port Macquarie Hastings Region

The two racing weekends have been secured for Jolly Nose as part of Port Macquarie Hastings Valley Council’s Event Sponsorship Program and are endorsed by the local Hastings Valley MTB Riders Club. This local support had been pivotal to the event’s success in the region, and Mayor Peta Pinson said that the region was looking forward to hosting these two events.

“The Fox Superflow is always a major success, and it is truly great to see local riders and lots of visitors come together to compete in a major event like this.

“We have a growing community of riders in our region, so to welcome back these two events is exciting, to continue to foster young champions and the interest in the sport, said Mayor Pinson.

“I wish all of the participants the very best of luck for the two action-packed weekends ahead, and I hope you all explore the wonderful offerings of our home while you are in town.”

Rocky Trail says that the team hopes that the races will draw solid local participation and also a great out-of-region visiting crowd. “We as event organisers aim to provide additional proof and data from our event to Council to continue investing in this sport and building more trails for it in the region”, says Wisata.

She added that local riders will be able to re-discover their home trails and re-kindle their love for mountain bike racing on their home track. Local and visiting gravity pinners were going to be able to get a ‘good dose of shredding the gnar’ in the Fox Superflow and put their endurance to the test in the cross-country event. The Shimano MTB Grand Prix is part of a weekend double-header with another race in Kempsey on the Sunday, with the aim to encourage regional and interstate visitors to come into the region.
