Rider Briefing: Fox Superflow sealed by Stan’s | Stromlo Forest Park ACT

Get pumped, get frothing, get excited and RACE the way you RIDE at the Fox Superflow –
at Stromlo Forest Park!

For this, we have moved mountains.

We are so glad to be racing in Canberra this weekend. We would like to sincerely thank our event partners: the teams from our destination partner ACT Events and Visit Canberra have supported and guided us throughout the planning process. The venue management from Stromlo Forest Park was truly supporting. All this was invaluable. A huge shout-out to them as well as the crews from Dynamic Motivation, The Handlebar Cafe as well as our accommodation partner, The Statesman Hotel in Canberra.

In the Covid-19 event environment and for this race in particular, we require a few new rules in order to being able to race. So, even if you are an experienced #rockytrailracer, please take the time to watch AND read through this entire rider briefing.

We are looking forward to be taking you Canberra and Stromlo Forest Park this weekend! A few showers expected on Friday afternoon, but brilliant Spring weather for the three race days.

We can’t wait to welcome you on top of Stromlo Forest Park!

RIDER BRIEFING CONTENT IN WRITING

Update Friday, 25.09.2020 –
Change of location of our Operations and Medical Hub – this is where you pick up the number plate => it is now at the start of the Double Dissolution track. The start location as indicated on the Google Map below is still the same (Start area Pork Barrell).
Also the “Western Car Park” of Stromlo Forest Park (END of Double Dissolution) will be open for us, so if you park there, it will be very easy to get your number plate on the way to the Start further up the hill.
You can also access this point easily from the main car park; stay on the lower side of the hill, ride up Wattle Happen + Blackberry Climb + Slant Six or stay on Fireroad + Go past Wombat Junction (Willo Memorial) and jump onto Willo Link, this spits you out right at the hub (or stay on fireroad that leads there too).

We are one of the few MTB events back globally running post the Covid-19 outbreak and all eyes will be on us. We need your cooperation.

How are we running this event and how do we keep you safe? By limiting the rider field to 55 per start slots at 9am, 10am or 11am across three race days Sat, Sun or Mon. For this we are launching the brand-new “Rocky Trail Async” style of racing. In summary and for the Fox Superflow this means that the traditional event centre will be replaced with an operational & medical support hub at the start of the race tracks. This will allow us to eliminate gatherings – please find all details below.

Please understand if some of the rules appear harsh, but we need to ensure that we can keep racing in this new world.

ABOUT: EVENT FORMAT

Fox Superflow is racing the way you ride.

Ride up at your own pace.
Drop in with your buddies on each others tyre or leave a space to pin.
It’s about doing party trains, railing berms and
SENDING IT!

For those of you, for who this will be the first FOX Superflow we differ from most other events by offering a much more relaxed format. This racing format has adapted well to the Covid-19 situation – the original and popular format has seen riders arrive, get their number plates and then spend all day out on the trails. Therefore, we have been able to control the rider movements really well.

Your Top 10 Things to Remember:

  1. We don’t have an event centre anymore – this is the launch of our Rocky Trail ASYNC Racing(TM) brand – it means, you will all participate in the same race, but just not all at the same time:
    • You arrive at Stromlo
      • !!!Update 25.09.2020 4pm!!! The “Western Car Park” * of Stromlo Forest Park will be open for us on the weekend and Monday – so you can park there and ride pas the Double Dissolution Finish and up to the start. => * Note, Martin calls it the “Northern Car Park” in our race map, apologies.
    • You get ride/race-ready and make your way to the Operations and Medical hub
      • !!!Update 25.09.2020 4pm!!!!! Pick up your number plate from the Operations and Medical hub, this is located at the Double Dissolution track start.
      • The starts will remain the same as indicated on the Google Map, HOWEVER, the Operations/Medical Hub and where you will pick up your number plate will be lower. – Due to the rain today, Martin can’t get our orange van up the hill and he will be based at the intersection Pork Barrell and Double Dissolution. => If you park at the Western Car Park, you’ll see it right away as you start ascending.
      • Click here for link to Google Map
    • There, at the start, you get your number plate.
    • Start racing, clock in your times, check them LIVE online.
    • When you are finished you leave again.
  2. You obviously need to be allowed to travel to the ACT in order to race. Please visit the ACT Government website for more details.
  3. There is no spectator access in the race start area or on the race track.
  4. You can start based on the time slot you registered at – this is the EARLIEST time you can arrive at the start of the hill. Timing will be activated from approximately 9:00am and you must be at a start at 4:30pm for the last race run. We will close the track when there are no riders as soon after 4:30pm.
  5. You can ride the tracks in any order. Ride with your mates, even if they are in different categories, genders or have “E’s” added.
  6. You have 5 chances to get each track nailed. Don’t stress if you mess something up. For tracks that cross fire trails you dont even have to finish to get start again, so ride back up. – With up to 5 runs, you are only limited by your how many times you can get up the hill.
  7. Typically, we space riders with 30sec gaps… If you want a larger gap, the starter will hold up people behind you. Just ask your friendly Rocky Trail starter.
  8. We’ve set up races so a first timer and have as much fun as an elite. Pin it down, and as you cross the line, you can check your phone to see your time against your mates.
  9. Every track will have B lines, so our novices, youngsters and learners can get down, and A Lines for those who want to commit to hitting a chute, hit a gap or send a drop.
  10. Our staff at rego and at the starts are there to help. Talk to them.

Please note – we are Covid Safe compliant, your briefing will be virtual, we’ll be social distancing, your podium awards will be online and we’ll make this the safest event you’ve ever been at! For the Stromlo Forest Park event, we are adding another layer of saefty management and Covid-19 risk mitigating measures – on top of our Covid-19 Safety Plan.

We can wait to see you smashing it! – Remember, your race photos are included in your entry, be sure to download them after the race and share your stories using:

In the following, please familiarise yourself with VENUE-SPECIFIC information and scroll down for EVENT REGULATIONS with regards to our Covid Safe Plans.

ABOUT: Stromlo Forest Park Venue

Stromlo Forest Park – Opperman Avenue, Stromlo ACT – Camping is not allowed at this venue.

Services on both days:

  • This event doesn’t have an event centre.
    • Stromlo Forest Park is a public mountain bike park and OPEN on race days. You and your visiting (non-racing) family/friends may use the public park facilities – there are great playgrounds and skills areas and a wide network of trails. We are staying away from the high-traffic trails.
  • Spectators not permitted in the start area or on the race tracks, but we do ask that all parents, guardians, supporters, media and crew sign up via our (free) SPECTATOR REGISTRATION form for Covid-19 tracking purposes. – May we request that EVERYONE observes STRICT social distancing guidelines.
  • Shuttles are not permitted for the event – FYI, because we are using trails that go out the back of the mountain, using shuttles (which start in the car park on the front of the mountain) would waste a lot of time. You basically ride to the top of the hill to get there AFTER your assigned start time and then the transitions between the three racing trails are not that far.
  • Facilities: Toilets are provided in the main car park but we won’t have any at the start.
  • Water: Please bring your own water. We will have some supplies at the start to top you up.
  • Medical Support: will be provided, based at the operations hub on top of the hill and at a half-way point (Pork Barrel-Double Dissolution Intersection).
  • Tech Support: not provided in the race, but there is a bike shop in the main car park.
  • Food/Catering: not provided in the race, but The Handlebar Cafe is a public cafe in the main car park and will be open on the weekend.

Race tracks

Refer to map on the event website. All three race tracks will start in the same spot – this is where you pick up your number plate. In response to the high influx of riders at Stromlo Forest Park in recent months, we are not running Skyline Luge to avoid the crowds.

START location: Pork Barrell Start area (end of Western Wedgetail)
PICK UP Number Plate + Operations/Medical Hub location: END of Pork Barrell/START of Double Dissolution intersection

We will run:

  • FOX: Pork Barrell – Rough Choice
  • STAN’s: Sunset Boulevarde – Pork Barrell – Slick Rock
  • LAZER: Slick Rock – Pork Barrell – Double Dissolution

  • Don’t litter – please take your rubbish back with you or throw it in the landfill or recycling bins we have near the registration tent.
  • Timing will be done with your timing chip – please ensure it is on your bike and that the plastic doesn’t touch any metal parts of your bike (e.g. don’t wrap the number plate around your handlebar).
  • If you need to pass a rider out on track please do it in a friendly and safe way. Keep in mind that you have multiple runs per track so if you get held up you can always have another go.
