Rocky Trail is supporting the Austrian ultra cyclist and three-time Race Across America (RAAM) Winner Christoph Strasser with local media services during his attempt to break the Trans-Australia record “Perth – Sydney” in January. He plans to complete the 3,950km distance in 6.5 days, starting on 10 January.
In the following, may I provide an overview of the ride and it would be great if you could help spread the word about this extreme project. The detailed route will go via Perth – Kalgoorlie – Norseman – Port Augusta – Mildura – Gundagai – Jugiong – Yass – Goulburn – Campbelltown – Sydney.
Ultracyclist Christoph Strasser wants to break Trans-Australia record “Perth – Sydney”
The first highlight in Christoph Strasser’s ultracycling season 2017 is the non-stop crossing of Australia. He wants to become the first man to ride his bike from Perth to Sydney in under one week! With the “World Record Down Under powered by owayo” on a 3,950 kilometers long route an entry into the book of records would be certain for him.
On December 31st, the Austrian Christoph Strasser will fly into the Australian west coast with his eight-man team, where he will acclimatize for the continental crossing. The start of the non-stop tour will take place on January, 10th 2017 at Cottesloe Beach in Perth. The distance to the world-famous Sydney Opera House is 3,950 kilometers and includes 16,000 meters of climbing. “Compared to the Race Across America, I have to complete half of the climbing on a similar distance, with the highest elevation being only 700 meters. But the challenge will be the weather. I will start the ride during the Australian summer and it will be constantly hot and dry, especially while crossing the Outback”, says the Austrian three-time-winner of Race Across America called “RAAM”, the world’s longest endurance bicycle race.
In the footsteps of Wolfgang Fasching and Gerhard Gulewicz
The former ultra-cyclist and 3-time-RAAM-winner Wolfgang Fasching was the first man who made the crossing of Australia popular in Strasser’s home country, Austria. In 1998, he completed the route from Perth to Sydney in 7 days and 19 hours. At that time, he bettered the record of the German Hubert Schwarz. Gerhard Gulewicz, another ultra-cyclist from Austria, rode across the “fifth” continent even faster. It only took him 7 days and 8 hours despite a severe crash on the last day. “I wish Christoph all the best and hope that he will bring the record to Austria again. I am sure, that he can achieve a much faster time. When the weather conditions are good, the record is possible in 6.5 days for him”, says Gulewicz, who has supported Christoph during his preparation with advice and details on route planning.
Strasser wants to do it in less than one week
The goal of Christoph Strasser is to complete the route in less than one week. “This tour is a new adventure for my support-crew and me; we look forward to the fascinating landscape of the Australian Outback. The flora and fauna, which we will see from the roadside, will be very exciting, as well as the world’s longest straight road in the Nullarbor plain. One part of the Nullarbor Highway is a 146.6 km straight”, describes Christoph. To the question why he is planning the record attempt in summer and not during a cooler month? “I would like to try out new cooling techniques at high temperatures and see this as a test for my next participation at RAAM. Owayo, my outfit sponsor, supports me with special jerseys to handle the hot conditions. In RAAM 2015, I brutally suffered under the hot conditions and could not finish the race. In 2016, I had to retire because of a car accident and I am already looking forward to my seventh start at RAAM in June 2017.”
Pictures can be used free of charge:
– Currently Strasser does very long rides up to 7 hours to train his base endurance.
– Special jerseys from his outfitter/sponsor owayo should help Strasser to handle the heat
