The Shimano Grand Prix mountain bike races bring back classic lap racing in 2023 with a set of distance challenges on short-course circuits. This round will be held at epic Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra and we’ve picked a blinder of a 9.8km race track with 3 race distances – The Hero (longest), The Adventure (middle) and The Challenge (shortest).
Distances will be approximately 75km, 50 kms and 25kms with riders completing a set number of laps within the 4 hour time limit.
The races have Age Group Categories for solos and pairs teams depending on the distance challenges. There will also be four specialty Classification Awards including KOM/QOM, Fastest Lap Time for adults and the Loan Market Junior Sprint as well as an “Hero Title” for the Male and Female Heroes.
This event is co-sponsored by Crofto, offering a $4,000 prize pool of Australian Mountain Biking clothing and accessories!

The Challenge

Get a taste for mountain bike racing! This classification is designed to be not all about fitness, but rewards overall bike skills and determination to make it a fun day out on rocky trails.

The Laps
Hero – Male 8 laps, Female 6 laps.
Adventure – Male 5 and Female 4 laps
Challenge – Male and Female 2 laps.

The Track
Lap Distance is approximately 9.8km
A classic Stromlo loop that includes some really fun tracks and avoids any of the big climbs with only approximately 170m of climbing and descending over the 9.8km length. There are 4 sections of fire road and the 100m long finish straight will allow plenty of feeding or passing opportunities. Finish straight will include be the feed/tech zone where riders can grab a bottle or GU, or receive mechanical support. Just after the finish mat a lane will be created that will be the transition lane for pairs riders.

It is a public MTB track and you can ride it in the lead up to the race.
You can camp at the Stromlo car park and event centre on the Friday night.

Sustainability
Our Sustainability Pledge is that we encourage our racers to follow some simple tips to ‘tread softly’ when visiting the bush and minimise damage to the natural environment. In summary, when you attend our events, please take only memories, immerse yourself into nature, enjoy spending time with like-minded people on ‘rocky trails’ and please, leave only footprints and tyre marks on the sanctioned trails and in the event perimeter marked out, if you’re a racer.
