The Jetblack Wild Wombat is a mountain bike challenge in Australia with roots in Austria… that’s a bold statement, you say?
Well, here’s our journey:
The event was created by two Austrians – Juliane and Martin Wisata – who have been living and mountain biking in Australia since 2003 and have been organising mountain biking events with Rocky Trail Entertainment for more than a decade. We took the ‘wild wombat’ to Austria in 2012 for three cross-country events in Gnas/Styria to introduce the local riders to the “Aussie-style” of racing singletrails. This typical Australian animal fit well as a mascot – it’s an easygoing and friendly mammal, which sometimes can be very stubborn and determined… just like us mountain bikers, we thought!
In 2018 the Wild Wombat returned to Australia with the Jetblack Wild Wombat race moving to the Eurobodalla and Batemans Bay!
The ‘Wild Wombat’ has become part of our Rocky Trail family since we took him to Austria in 2012 and he has become quite the ‘celebrity’ over there as the mascot of our Austrian cross-country events until 2014.
Since then he’s been travelling the country – here you see him in a gondola high above Schladming in Styria. Recently he has become a bit home-sick. So, we brought him back and he is moving to the South Coast with the Jetblack Wild Wombat!
You can check out his adventures so far on his Facebook page and LIKE it for event updates 🙂
