How they do it? WBR partners with communities to deliver specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles for people in need. For this they developed a special bike that is funded through the fundraising initiatives around the globe.

The Bike: Equipped with a purpose-designed Buffalo Bicycle from World Bicycle Relief, students, health workers and entrepreneurs in low-income regions create opportunities for themselves, their families and entire communities. The Buffalo Bicycle is engineered for heavy loads, long distances, and rugged terrain, using high-quality parts and materials designed specifically to meet our riders’ needs.

The journey so far: Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has collaborated with thousands of communities to connect hard-working rural women, men, girls, and boys with the services and opportunities they need to thrive. Women, in particular, face significant cultural barriers to accessing education, healthcare and employment. That’s why World Bicycle Relief’s approach prioritizes women and girls, aiming for 70% of participants receiving our bicycles to be female.

Social Enterprise: When people in the communities we serve saw the strength and durability of our rugged bicycles, the local demand for high-quality transportation grew exponentially. In 2008, World Bicycle Relief formed subsidiary Buffalo Bicycles Ltd., creating an innovative hybrid model in which the nonprofit wholly owns a for-profit that sells bicycles to other nonprofits, businesses, local governments and individuals to meet this increasing market demand. Sales from Buffalo Bicycles Ltd. now help fund World Bicycle Relief’s programs.

Jetblack 24 Hour: Race alongside the Australian WBR Team at the 24-hour race in the Seven Valleys Region in Lithgow this year. We are honoured to welcome Australian and International Board Members at the event to launch our cooperation in November.

What’s next? For 2024, Rocky Trail plans to cooperate more closely and involve WBR in our Rocky Trail Academy program foster their education initiatives and spread the word among our juniors about just how powerful bicycles are.
