RT Academy & Fox Superflow® weekend Townsville 2021 | Results, Photos

The Rocky Trail crew with Event Managers Jo Parker and Bob Morris hosted the second racing weekend in a row at Townsville’s Mount Douglas Reserve. The action started with the North Queensland Schools Comp on the Friday as part of the “Rocky Trail Academy” junior development programme. The weekend had gravity racers clock in time runs on three race tracks with the Fox Superflow®, Rocky Trail’s growing gravity enduro event.

The events had been secured by Townsville Enterprise Limited and the Fox Superflow® had also received support by the Townsville City Council.

Race Director Bob Morris said that the schools event had shown the amazing talent that is being reared in North Queensland,

“For the first time we saw the students racing down to the last second with the race leads changing spectacularly on those last runs across at least 3 categories – it was such an exciting atmosphere and it was so rewarding to see the passion and commitment by students as well as teachers, parents and supporters on the day!

Morris said that students from 14 different schools had participated. With many local schools at the start line, some racers had travelled to Townsville from as far as Mackay. And it was Mackay’s Ethan Weiss who clocked in the fastest time with 6:45.2 ahead of local shredders Drew Roberts and Ethan Sampson. In the girls, it was Milana Anderson from Annandale Christian College who won the female classification in 7:47.6 ahead of St Margaret Mary’s College students Mackenzie Munro and Loralei Watson.

The Rocky Trail Academy programme is now supported by Shingleback Off-Road and will continue in SE Queensland in July.

Fox Superflow®: lots of stoke, none of the stress

The Fox Superflow® has established itself as one of Australia’s most popular gravity enduro races with the unique way it lets its racers take control of their own adventure. With no start orders, there is no strict category seeding, which allows riders of all ages and abilities to spend all day together out on the ‘rocky trails’. Untimed rides to the starts make it a social and fun affair and the individual timed race runs get those heart rates up across all classifications.

The fastest man of the day was 20-year old Patrick Morrison, a “local super-fast pinner”, as Race Director Morris described him. With 13:37.1 he won by almost 20 sec ahead of Master racer Grant Cooper, one of the club stalwarts. Joshua Leigh was in third with 14:09.9.

One of the many stories written over the weekend was the one of John Johnson. The former BMX World Championship racer from Townsville had returned to the race tracks for the first time since his BMX glory days and now racing in the Master 40+ class came in fourth outright with 14:28.3. Johnson admitted that he caught the racing bug again,

This Fox Superflow® racing was awesome, I can see myself getting back into bike racing because of this!

In the women’s, it was 19-year old Elite racer Iona Anderson who won outright in 15:12.1 ahead of Kristy Kerrisk (15:35.3) and Andrea Coleman.

Big groups of riders competed together with the jerseys of Top Brand bike and Crank’d very visible.

The father-son duo of Corry Cycles in Mackay with Ryan and Harrison Corry had made it a road-trip to Townsville with family and a whole entourage of Mackay racers. With experienced competitor Ryan celebrating his 41st birthday on the weekend, the 14-year old Harry had one mission,

I’m going after Dad this weekend!

And so he did: Harrison Corry took out the U15’s division with 16:14.1 beating Dad in the Master class by 4.2 seconds!

This event also concluded the QLD North Series of the Fox Superflow®. Ethan Weiss from Mackay is the Elite Male winner and Kristy Kerrisk is the top female points holder. Most points across the male racing field go to Harrison Corry.

The Fox Superflow ® will now “move South” with the QLD South Series starting in July. For more dates and venues, visit the Rocky Trail website.
